Year 11 Revision Workshop – Tuesday 25th February 2014
We have secured an excellent opportunity for Year 11 to hone their study skills. Fresh from their mock exam results, and in preparation for the summer exams, we have booked a session with Study Flex on Tuesday 25th February 2014.
Study Flex will train your child to ‘rehearse’ for their forthcoming exams, using memory and key revision strategies to promote independent learning. Other schools have recommended Study Flex saying they do so “without reservation”, and that they have had “rave reviews from students and accompanying staff”.
For a small contribution of £5, your child will be given the skills to fully prepare for their range of subjects and receive a free 28-page workbook to use to support their revision at home. We have recently seen Study Flex in action and are certain that their fresh, motivational and exciting techniques will fully engage your child. For no extra cost, you are invited to a Parents’ Information Evening on Monday 24th February from 6 - 6:30pm, for you to get a taster of what will be delivered to your child the following day.

Year 7 are looking very smart in the new school uniform. Many older students have also started to wear the new school jumper and blazer. As other students grow out of current uniform we strongly encourage you to move over to the new uniform items. The blazer shirt and tie will be compulsory for current Year 8 and 9 students in September 2014. Current Year 10 should be wearing a badged item of clothing which may be the new blazer, new jumper or original sweatshirt.
As the weather cools in the autumn students will be encouraged to wear at least one of the following: a school blazer, a school sweatshirt, a school fleece or a new school jumper. In the winter months it will be too cold to come to school in just a polo shirt, or a shirt and tie. Hoodies and other non school uniform items must not be worn and will be confiscated. Please see our full uniform details here.

Facebook official site
In addition to the school website we are now maintaining a presence on Facebook where we have an official page.
This will also be used for announcements as back up to our main website. Only staff can 'join' the site - but all students, staff and parents can see the site. We will feature news items, photos, and messages from the school. The page can be visited at:
We hope this will allow students and parents to keep in touch with our activities via the medium of facebook.
An overview of the homework structure can be found here.
Student use of Mobile Phones
Students will need to ensure that their phones are switched off, or are left in silent mode whilst inside the building. Headphones should also be in bags or pockets and not be visible. There are signs around the school to remind students of this. Phones are likely to be confiscated if used in lessons or in the building unless a member of staff has given permission for a call to be made or the phone to be used for a particular reason. We would encourage students not to bring in expensive phones or equipment, the school takes no responsibility for loss, theft or damage of this type of personal possession.
Direct Contact with Parents/Carers
Occasionally, students have made direct contact with a parent/carer to alert them to a perceived difficulty in school without taking advice from a member of the school staff. This has resulted in the arrival of the parent/carer onto the school site without the school having any knowledge of the situation. If your child makes contact with you, please refer back to school by telephone in the first instance.
Over the last few months parents/carers have been signing up for access to our Parent Portal. The Portal will allow you access to school reports, timetables, school letters and publications. In time we will also be able to provide attendance information and communicate to parents using email and text messaging. As more parents join the portal, the school will be able to make savings on paper and postal costs by providing access to important information online. Please take this opportunity to sign up for portal access now.
The Parent Portal will accept registration from parents. Details of how to register are available on the Parent Portal link. For those who have already registered for access you can visit the Portal directly here.
Printing at school
Please see the information here in connection with printing costs and allocation of print credit for students.
We have amended our response to students who arrive late to school at the start of the day. Any student who arrives late on 3 or more occasions during a term, will be directed to attend a school detention which take place each Friday afternoon from 1500 – 1600 hours. Students failing to attend the sanction are likely to be subject to a fixed-term exclusion.
Each week students are encouraged to join in with a range of activities beyond the curriculum. The details of the activities and events on offer will be shown here each week.
Parking – Please do not use the bays marked for use by Blue Badge holders when collecting students during the day or from after school activities.
Students who wish to cycle to school must apply for a cycle permit through Student Services. The permit requires the commitment from students to wear a helmet on their head in transit, and for the bicycles to be roadworthy. This means that they must be fitted with a functioning front and rear brake. Whilst we will do all that we can to ensure the security of bicycles stored on the premises, we do not take any responsibility for theft or damage. Given this we recommend that students wishing to cycle to school have their bicycles insured.
We are receiving a high volume of prospective educationalists wishing to undertake work experience or an observation placement at John Hanson. Please click on this link if you would like more information about our procedures before contacting us.
